Q. So you’re a makeup artist. Tell me a little about how you got into makeup artistry, what you love about it and what’s trending right now in makeup. Lastly, if you had to choose one MUST HAVE product for every women, what would it be?

A. I got into makeup artistry around the age of 18. I always loved the different ways fashion magazines would capture a story with hairstyling and makeup . It really is such an art. I started at Sephora when I was of 21, while in cosmetology school and I’m still there. I love that I can enhance someones natural features without masking their beauty. I love to make people feel so good about themselves, that they cant contain their smile. Its such an amazing feeling. There’s actually a lot trending for sumer makeup. First, the color of the year is wild orchid. The coolest way to tackle the purple trend is with eyeshadow, but wearing purple washes on your lips and tips is another option. Bright orange lips are also really in. The easiest way to wear a bright lip is with a chunky glide on pencil. Graphic eyeliner is huge also with straight flicks and angular shapes. This makes the retro obsessions instantly more modern. Big, bold brows that lean towards boyishness are very current. Lastly, the biggest makeup trend right now is little or no makeup – it’s all about a flawless complexion. For every women’s “must have product” I would definitely have to say Bobbi Browns corrector concealer. Its amazing because its specifically designed to neutralize dark circles, providing an instant pick me up.

Q. How has being a double threat – hairdresser and makeup artist – benefited you?

A. I feel that because I am a hair stylist as well as a makeup artist, has benefited me because I’m able to be ambidextrous at photo shoots, as well as at AJF and Sephora. When I’m at Sephora, I’m able to give great hair and makeup advice to clients – of course recommending that they see me at AJF. While I’m at the salon, I’m also able to do special occasion makeupovers. In the past I have been able to give estheticians tutorials on how to accomplish the traditional smoky eye, as well as on highlighting and contouring.

Q. You have created a niche for yourself as a colorist. What drew you to color and currently, what’s your favorite color technique?

A. I have always been drawn to color. I feel like my history as a makeup artist has made me pretty familiar with what tones look good on what complexions. It is so fun creating unique colors and placements for every client! My favorite color technique is definitely hair painting – it’s a fun way to have a pop of color but still looking sun kissed and not overdone.

Q. As a hairdresser, what is the most rewarding part of your job?

A. As a hairdresser, the most rewarding part of my job is seeing my clients leave happy and refreshed and with a better outlook on life. Having awesome hair really does make you stand a little taller!

Q. What compelled you to become a member of the Team at AJF Salon and what do you think you have gained from being a part of the team? What sets AJF Salon apart from other salons?

A. I was compelled to become a member of the AJF team mainly because of the educational opportunities. I also love how everyone at AJF is so down to earth and just has such a positive attitude – everyone here meshes so well. I feel like I have gained so much from working here. Teamwork is a primary focus because everyone helps everyone out here, it’s not a one man show in any way. I have also gained so much knowledge picking other stylists brains – we all love to brainstorm different color techniques as well as formulas. I feel that AJF is different from other salons out there. The talent here is unparalleled. Because Adam is such an amazing hairdresser, it makes all of us to strive to be the best we can be . The education that we recieve on a daily basis fine tunes our abilities and keeps us wanting to learn more, being the best that we can be.

Q. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? What are your industry goals?

A. I see myself in 10 years with a solid career being a stylist, being double booked and having my own assistant – also having a couple of kids with a house and a big backyard would be nice!
