Featured Stylist Jacob

Jacob is an innovative member of the AJF Salon team. Currently a Junior Stylist, he shows a great deal of promise as an artist. He has been a member of the beauty industry for a number of years, crafting looks and beautifying women as a high-end makeup artist, having recently diversified to add hair stylist to his repertoire. With a personality that joyously overflows onto his clients, it’s a delight to spend time in Jacob’s chair. We know that you will find his story as fascinating as we do:

1. So, you’re a wildly talented makeup artist. Tell me a little about how you got into makeup artistry, what you love about it and what’s trending right now in makeup. Lastly, if you had to choose one MUST HAVE product for every women, what would it be?

Thank you, I appreciate you saying that… If someone asked me if I thought that I would be doing makeup as a career, let alone hair, I probably would have called them crazy. I always wanted to have a corporate job, wear a suit and tie, and make big money… those were my primary goals. I did just that for several years until one day I found myself behind a desk, at the age of 25, working in retail banking – and I was miserable. I had been studying makeup independently and playing with it (strictly as a hobby) since I was nineteen. I was introduced to makeup by a wildly talented young makeup artist named Todd Wallace, who was best friends with my first love. He showed me how to apply my first eyeliner and I have been hooked ever since. I picked up every book I could find at my local Borders Books store and would read and look at the makeup tutorials for hours. I guess that was my generation’s version of YouTube tutorials. Archaic, right? Haha. So, at the age of 25, sitting at my desk, I decided to take a leap of faith and seek out work in retail cosmetics to follow my dreams. I’ve been there ever since making women feel confident, beautiful, and empowered. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. As far as trend, the most longstanding trend I have been seeing for a while now is radiant, dewy skin, whether that be accomplished using your perfect moisturizer, foundation, highlight powder or cream. It’s a trend that has and will be around for some time to come. Along those lines, the one product that I think every woman should have in her arsenal would be Airflash foundation by Dior Cosmetics. It’s a one-step skin perfector that can be used for evening out your skintone all by itself, over foundation to set, or even to touch up part way through your day. It has that perfect radiant glow and wears for hours for a beautiful finish to any person’s skin. There is not one person that I would not use Airflash on.

2. How has being a double threat – hairdresser and makeup artist – benefited you?

I originally had the intention of earning my Cosmetology license for just that reason; to be able to offer the services of hair styling and makeup design for special occasions. I have been working in the bridal industry doing makeup for quite a few years now, and have been passed up on contracts in favor of someone that had the potential to do both services. I look forward to benefiting from the ability to do both, which will only deepen my bond with my existing clientele in makeup, as one service is made exponentially better when done with the other.

3. As a hairdresser, what is the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding part of being a hairdresser is gifting someone with personal confidence. I have always been fascinated with the beauty of women, from the first time I played with my mother’s hair as a young boy. In my experience, most people struggle with seeing the potential in themselves. To help someone see themselves as beautiful is the most rewarding part of my life, and of my career as a hairdresser.

4. What compelled you to become a member of the Team at AJF Salon and what do you think you have gained from being a part of the team? What sets AJF Salon apart from other salons?

I was compelled to seek out a career with AJF because from the time that I attended school at Federico. I was able to see how important continued education was to Adam and the team at AJF. To be able to work somewhere where building upon your existing skills to better yourself and the experience of your clients was beyond alluring from the start. I feel so blessed to be in a salon that consistently challenges it’s stylists to acquire knowledge. I truly believe that what sets AJF Salon apart from the others is the fact that every one of the stylists here are open to learning to do something differently. We are never satisfied with being as good as we were the day before. I see each stylist inspire others around them, and that is what keeps us all creatively charged.

5. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? What are your industry goals?

In ten years I’d love to see myself doing what I’m doing now, just with ten more years of knowledge and experience on my belt. I’d love to say that I want to be a platform artist and travel the world, making millions building an empire, but over the years that I’ve worked in the beauty industry I find myself most content sitting with a client, teaching and learning… helping them feel like the best version of themselves, and building strong friendships with them. With that, I would be happiest – Jacob Tomás del Rosario
